Artificiality Institute launches Thinking With AI, a new professional certification

The Artificiality Institute today announced Thinking With AI™, a professional certification for people whose work depends on judgment. The program builds, and then assesses, the practices professionals need to work extensively with AI while remaining the authors of their own thinking.

The first cohorts will take place in New York City (December 2–3, 2026), San Francisco (February 2–3, 2027), and Chicago (April 6–7, 2027). Each two-day course is taught by Institute co-founders Helen and Dave Edwards and limited to 25 participants. It is followed by three months of guided practice on participants' own work, after which certification is awarded on demonstration of the practices against the Institute's published standard.

The program grows out of the Institute's research into how AI changes reasoning, identity, and professional judgment. Alongside its study of irreducible work across nearly 900 occupations, the Institute has been pursuing a question that becomes more pressing as AI enters everyday professional life: how do you use these systems extensively without giving away the thinking that makes your work valuable?

Cognitive science has long described phenomena such as cognitive offloading, automation bias, and the illusion of explanatory depth. AI makes them easier to miss. People find themselves approving work they haven't fully interrogated, relying on conclusions they can't explain, or becoming more confident without becoming more understanding.

Thinking With AI is built around practical ways of noticing those moments and responding to them. Participants work on their own decisions, documents, and projects, developing habits that fit the AI tools they already use rather than learning a prescribed workflow.

Certified practitioners receive a dated, verifiable digital badge linking to the standard they were assessed against. The Artificiality Institute is a member of The CPD Certification Service, and the course has been submitted for CPD certification.
